Sawyer Reads The Fountainhead!

Thursday, March 15th, 2007

the_fountainhead.jpgFinally, there’s a novel that I don’t have to research to understand the significance! Sawyer was reading Ayn Rand’s The Fountainhead. This novel is about an architect named Howard Roark who has ideals that he refuses to compromise for anyone. His refusal to compromise costs him many things–fame, fortune, society’s respect. But the thing is that he doesn’t care to have any of those things. His “integrity” is more important to him. I put integrity in quotation marks because Roark has his own ideas about what’s true and just. So, which character does this sound like? Some might say Sawyer since he was reading the book, but I’m leaning toward Locke. His actions have always been questioned by fans. We never really know what he’s thinking, but we know he’s passionate about what he believes. What do you guys think?? Given my brief description of Howard Roark, which Lost character resembles him most?

I’ll have a recap for you a little later, so check back!

Michael Emerson article

Wednesday, March 14th, 2007

michael-emerson.jpgThere’s a great article about Michael Emerson, who plays Ben, on Reading Eagle. Here’s a portion:

“…I have an imaginary back story from which I play the part of Ben,” Emerson said, laughing, “and of course my vision of the character is maybe slightly more heroic than the audience’s vision of him.”

The fact is that the Others, their identity, their mission, it’s all very much still a mystery and very ambiguous. We have a certain amount of evidence of their cruelty and calculation and manipulation, but we don’t have evidence of what they’re up against. They appear to be at war against someone, someone other than the Lostaways, and we don’t know what the stakes of that war are, although the stakes are evidently high.

Lost Character Flashbacks

Tuesday, March 13th, 2007

ABC.com has put videos on their website compiling several characters’ flashbacks. According to TV Squad, “All of the footage is taken from previous episodes, and the videos last about four minutes each.” Flashback compilation videos are available for Jack, Kate, Locke, Sawyer, and Charlie. It seems ABC will periodically put more video up for each character’s flashback. Go to ABC.com for the videos.

emilie-de-ravine.jpgHere’s what’s coming up in this week’s episode titled “Par Avion”:

“It goes back to when Claire is 17,” de Ravin says. “There’s a big jump from where her life is now to where it was then. I play a completely different character because her life is so dramatically different — a lot of very deep emotional issues there that she’s still dealing with on the island.”

De Ravin sports a black wig for this flashback to Claire’s dark teenage phase. “You meet her parents and see what she’s been dealing with,” de Ravin says.

A flashback last season led viewers to believe that Claire’s father and Jack’s father might be one and the same. True? “You’ll see,” she says with a grin.

Spoilers!!

Friday, March 9th, 2007

matthew-fox.jpgI know many of you don’t like spoilers, so if you don’t want to know, please don’t keep reading!

From Kristin at E! Online:

WARNING: SPOILER SECTION
(Don’t read if you don’t want to know!)

Jamie in Mobile, Alabama: Are Claire and Jack siblings on Lost?
Big spoiler alert. Yes, they are. And we’ll know it before they do.

From George in Tallahassee, Florida: Who is the new female regular on Lost?
I’m pretty sure she’s a subterranean character. Damon and Carlton seemed to admit there’s a whole underground contingency on the island in the latest Lost Redux video clip.

Lost Recap - Enter 77 (March 7)

Thursday, March 8th, 2007

We had a little fun and a little misery last night. Hurley beat an over-confident Sawyer in a ping pong match, meaning that Sawyer had to give up using nicknames for a week, which probably felt like torture to Sawyer. In the flashback, Sayid had to face one of his torture vicitms. It wasn’t a good night for Sayid. He was shot by Patchy, and in his flashback, he was beaten and threatened with torture himself. Not good.

I’ll start with the flashback. Sayid was working as a chef in Paris when a strange man comes to his restaurant and asks Sayid to come work for him. By the way, Sayid was using another name (Najim maybe?). It turns out that this guy’s wife, Amira, was one of Sayid’s torture victims while he was a member of the Iraqi Republican Guard. Amira’s husband wants revenge; it seems Amira merely wants an apology. Amira talks to Sayid alone and tells him a story of some children who were torturing a cat. She rescued the cat, but sometimes it will scratch her or bite her because the cat forgets that he’s safe. Amira says that she knows what it feels like to never feel safe because of what Sayid did to her. She asks him to admit what he did to her and say that he remembers her. Sayid says, “I remember you. Your face has haunted me. I am sorry, so sorry for what I did to you.” She says she forgives him and that she’ll tell her husband that she was mistaken so he would let Sayid go. She says she will never be like a torturer. Wow.

The cat shows up late in the show when Sayid, Locke, Kate, and Rousseau find the Flame station with Patchy (aka Mikhail? The names were hard to catch). Sayid decides to walk up to the house unarmed to talk to Patchy. Patchy shoots Sayid in the arm, and Locke and Kate shoot at Patchy. Patchy claims that he is “the last living member of the Dharma Initiative,” but Sayid’s not buying it. Patchy sews Sayid up and tells him about his past. He claims he was a member of the Soviet army and was stationed in a listening post (is it the same listening post we saw at the end of last season??), but he was dismissed from his position. He saw an ad in the paper for the Dharma Initiative that said, “Would you like to save the world?” He joined Dharma, and he’s been on the island for 11 years working in the Flame. The Flame’s purpose is to communicate with the outside world. He says that Dharma had had some problems with the Hostiles (obviously the Others), who had been on the island a long time before Dharma arrived, and he was one of the few who survived. Turns out that Sayid was right not to believe him because Patchy IS one of the Others, and the black lady Other is there as well. They all fight, and Patchy ends up holding Locke at gunpoint while Sayid has the lady at gunpoint. Patchy starts speaking in another language to the lady, and obviously she told him to shoot her because he does shoot and kill her.

Before all of this, though, Locke had found a computer in the Flame with a chess game. He’s immediately sucked in. Patchy said he’s never been able to beat the computer, but Locke does. When he beats the computer, Alvar Hanso appears on the screen and starts giving instructions about what numbers to enter for certain situations. He says something about the Hostiles (anybody catch it??) and to enter 77. Well, that’s what John does, and the Flame explodes a few moments later. Sayid’s furious, of course. Rousseau wants to kill Patchy. Sayid says, “No, he’s my prisoner. I will decide his fate.” And the episode ends with a shot of the cat.

A couple of questions:

Why was Locke so obsessed with the computer?? Did this bother anyone else? And why would he enter any number into the computer without checking with someone else? It makes you wonder whose side Locke’s on…

Why was Sawyer’s only task after losing to stop with the nicknames? Do they really bother everybody that much?

Did anyone catch the funniest line? Sawyer to Nikki: “Who the hell are you?”

What did you think? What did I leave out? There was a lot of information, and I only got to watch the episode once, so I may have missed something. Let me know what you thought!

“Finish it!!!”

Thursday, March 8th, 2007

Did anybody else have flashbacks to The Karate Kid?? The scary sensei yelling, “Finish him!!” Maybe I was the only one…

So, poor Sayid. We learned some scary things about him last night. Still, I find myself pulling for him. I know he’s done some horrible, horrible things in his past, but I keep hoping he truly regrets what he’s done. I guess we’ll see.

There are lots of things to discuss, and I’ll have a full recap a little bit later, so check back!

sayid.jpgAccording to USA Today, here’s a little of what we can expect from the March 7 episode, titled “Enter 77″:

“We learn about Sayid’s time in Paris and find out what happens to a torturer when he’s forced to answer for past sins,” says executive producer Damon Lindelof. In present time, executive producer Carlton Cuse adds, “Sayid leads an expedition to the mysterious Dharma station known as ‘The Flame.’ ” A cat from Sayid’s past makes an island cameo.

All [Naveen] Andrews will offer up is: “There’s loads of heavy emotions … and I’m cooking in it.”

What fans thought of “Tricia Tanaka”

Monday, March 5th, 2007

Here’s a few of the comments posted on Pop Candy about last week’s episode:

Posted by Betsy:
I love the Three Dog Night song that was playing during the VW ride, but I couldn’t remember the name. So, I researched it on the Internet, and it’s called Shambala. I then read the lyrics, and it was a perfect song for Hurley and his struggles.

http://www.oldielyrics.com/lyrics/three_dog_night/shambala.html

Then, I realized I had no idea what or where Shambala is. So I did a little more research, and according to http://www.shambhala.com/html/about/defined.cfm (and pay special attention to the capitalized word)…

Internally, Shambhala is the DHARMA chakra, located in the heart of all beings. It is the symbol for mind, completing the trinity of body, speech, and mind.

Holy crap!!! This website mentioned Dharma!!!! Plus, with the lyrics and how this relates to Hurley, is this a coincidence? I don’t think so. These writers are GENIUS!!!!!!!

I had an “ah-ha!” moment last night, but it might be because I am slower than everyone else at picking up on clues. (I multi-task too much while watching shows.) Anyway, I knew there was a Locke-Hurley box company connection, but I had no idea how Locke became paralyzed. Last night, when Hurley was talking about the person that jumped from his accountant’s office roof, I finally put the pieces together. I enjoyed the episode - I am not a fan of Kate or Jack, so it was nice to finally see the rest of the crew. (It was starting to feel less like an ensemble show, and the characters I liked the least were getting all of the face time.)

Posted by morpheus917:
That couldn’t have been Locke who jumped out the window. We saw the man jump back in Season i while Hurley was talking to his accountant/lawyer guy in an office building. The guy told Hurley that he owned a box company (Hulrey wasn’t aware of that) and then we saw the body hurl past the window right then! Locke would’ve been states away at the company.

Talking around the water cooler this morning and a co-worker brought up a really good point. I haven’t seen this addressed yet, but does almost every one of the original “Losties” have a father issue? Last night addressed Hurley’s father issue. Over the run of the show they have touched on father issues with Jack, Kate, Sawyer, Locke, Boone/Shannon, Sun, Jin… I can’t specifically remember if anything has been mentioned about Charlie’s, Sayid’s, or Claire’s fathers, but I think they are scheduled for upcoming flashbacks this season. Could this be a central theme of the show/reason that they are “Lost”? Also, if Russo’s daughter is the Alex that helped Kate and Sawyer, and Ben is supposedly her “Father”, does that mean a relationship between Russo and Ben???

There are lots more here if you’d like to check it out.

Interview with Henry Ian Cusick

Friday, March 2nd, 2007

desmond1.jpgdominic-monaghan.jpgThe Daily Record has a great interview with Henry Ian Cusick, who plays Desmond on Lost. Any fears that Desmond may not be around for a while on the show can be forgotten after reading this:

Henry, 39, has moved to the beautiful location with his wife and three sons and, as the third series continues tomorrow, he said: “We wake up every morning smiling. It’s finally sunk in that I’m now working on Lost and living in Hawaii.

“I can now relax into it and not worry that’s it getting taken away from me, like I’m killed off or it was mistake. Lost has changed my life totally and completely.”

So, those of us who love Desmond have no need to worry. And after “Flashes Before Your Eyes,” I think we’d pretty much determined that Desmond is a key player in the Lost world. The article has some great information about Dominic Monaghan as well. Check it out here if you’d like to read more.

Lost Recap - Tricia Tanaka is Dead (Feb. 28)

Thursday, March 1st, 2007

Hurley and his dad have a complicated relationship, to say the least. Hurley’s flashback showed Hurley as a young boy working on a car when his dad leaves for “a trip” to Las Vegas. We find out later that he left them for over 17 years. His dad, played by Cheech Marin, shows back up after Hurley’s won the lottery. It seems his mom has some “needs” and asked her estranged husband to come back to live with them. Hurley’s not pleased. But his dad is full of nice one-liners, like “Having hope is never stupid” and “In this world, you’ve gotta make your own luck.”

One of the big questions I had going into this episode was, “Who is Tricia Tanaka?” It turns out that she was a reporter who was interviewing Hurley about his lottery win in front of the Chicken Shack that he’d just purchased. She gets fed up with Hurley’s bad attitude and leaves him standing outside to go into the restaurant. A meteor crashes into the restaurant killing Tricia Tanaka. This is just the first incident in a string of bad incidents that happen to Hurley, leading him to believe that he’s cursed because of the money. He believes he needs to get rid of the money to get rid of the curse. His dad takes him to a psychic to figure out if he’s cursed. Unfortunately, good old dad paid the psychic to tell Hurley that his curse could be exorcised. Hurley figures it out and decides to leave for Australia to figure out where the numbers he used for the lottery came from. His dad says he’ll be there when he gets back, and maybe they can have a fresh start. Wonder if his dad’s still waiting for him??

The first shot back on the island was heartbreaking. Hurley was talking to Libby’s grave and telling her that he’s not scared when he’s with her. Poor Hurley! Even though I’m not sure if Libby was all good, I hate it that Libby was taken away from him so quickly.

Charlie tells Hurley that Desmond told him he was going to die. Hurley thinks that Desmond may be right and that it may be Hurley’s fault. He says, “I’m bad luck. Death finds me, dude.” Just then, Vincent the dog runs out of the jungle with a skeletal arm with a key on it. The key happens to be to a bus that Hurley decides he needs to fix. It’s a feel-good project that Hurley believes they all could benefit from. Sadly, no one really wants to help fix up the bus. Eventually, Jin and Sawyer pitch in. There were some funny scenes while Hurley, Jin, and Sawyer were working on the beer-filled van. Sawyer had a Sesame Street shout-out when he called Hurley “Snuffy,” and he said to the English-learning Jin, “Well, look who’s Hooked on Phonics.” I laughed out loud. Finally, after rolling down a large hill, the van starts, and Hurley, Jin, Sawyer, and Charlie have a little joy ride. It was good to see them having fun again. After that joyful scene, poor Sawyer was left sitting along on the beach drinking beer. Obviously, he loves Kate, but Kate was off to rescue Jack.

Kate, Locke, and Sayid went into the jungle looking for help. They found Rousseau. Kate told her that she believes she met her daughter, Alex. It looks like Rousseau will be helping to save Jack. We’ll see.

So, what did you think of this episode? It was a nice change from previous episodes, but did you find yourself missing the drama and the intrigue or was the break good? Talk to me.

Victory or Death

Thursday, March 1st, 2007

Finally, Hurley had a little victory. This episode made me so sad for Hurley, but I was so glad that he found a way to find some hope on the island. And I was so glad that van started! This episode was a nice break from the craziness, and I’ll do a full recap as soon as I can. Check back later!
