Lost: Music Videos

Thursday, January 31st, 2008

Apparently, these were aired last night during the special screening of Season 3’s finale (which I haven’t had the chance to watch)…The song choice fitted their characters, huh?

Kate
Criminal, Fiona Apple

Sawyer
Bad to the Bone

There are a couple more on the official site.

By the way, ratings last night? Here are the numbers from Nielsen:

Starting out against an “Idol”-boosted installment of Fox’s “Moment of Truth,” a special replay of the third season finale of “Lost” built on its lead-in to draw an average audience of 8.5 million viewers and a 3.3 rating, 8 share among Adults 18-49 from 9:00-11:00 p.m. The show was enhanced with on-screen facts and back story. The night prior to its fourth season opener (Thursday – 1/31/08 at 9:00 p.m. ET), the “Lost” encore took second to “Moment of Truth” at 9:00 p.m. in Adults 18-49 (3.3/8) and then moved up to No. 1 during the 10 o’clock hour, beating NBC’s original “Law & Order” by 10% (3.4/9 vs. 3.1/8). In fact the repeat “Lost” ranked No. 1 from 10:00-11:00 p.m. across each of the key young adults, men and women demos: AD18-34 (2.6/8), M18-49 (2.9/8), W18-49 (3.9/10), M18-34 (2.1/6) and W18-34 (3.2/9).

Compared to the Net’s performance in the 2-hour time period on the year-ago night with original programming (“According to Jim”/”In Case of Emergency“/”Primetime”), the repeat “Lost” improved ABC’s delivery by 2.9 million viewers and by 65% in Adults 18-49 (5.6 million and 2.0/5 on 1/31/07).

A note about increasing DVR penetration and year to year rating comparisons: Year-to-year rating trends based on the Live + Same Day data stream may be somewhat distorted by the level of DVR penetration in the Nielsen sample, which has nearly doubled from 12% at the same point in 2006, up to 22% currently. More viewers are watching shows on their own timetables, which may not be reflected in the overnight next day numbers. Therefore, the only truly valid year-to-year comparison would be one based on the Live + 7 Day metric, once those stats are released by Nielsen.

Cloverfield

Wednesday, January 30th, 2008

cloverfield_poster_thumb.jpg There have been so many dissenting opinions about this movie, but count me among those who simply enjoyed it. Yes, I enjoyed Cloverfield and I enjoyed it without having to feel nauseated or dizzy. My main concern before watching this film was exactly that. I don’t exactly have a 20/20 vision so anything that affects it like that, is sure to give me a headache (those first-person gaming videos? I detest those exactly because of the camera angles).

But surprise, surprise! In the middle of the screening, to be more specific, the moment I saw Liberty’s head come crashing down on the street, I told my companion — “Why did people say this was a bad movie? This is so well-made!”

In between scenes, I felt the hair on my arms rise. It was riveting, the screams, the view from the camera. Just so riveting. It was like being there. And as what others have probably told you, it was like watching a video footage from when the World Trade Center collapse in 9/11.

As for the story though, it was simply a story of human survival, of human nature…of which we’ve seen plenty already. I could not completely empathize with the characters, they were annoying. And the guy holding the camera was the most annoying. But that didn’t bother me and hindered me from liking the movie.

I went to watch Cloverfield not expecting anything. I actually and purposely stayed away from any spoiler, the moment I read about this movie sometime last year.

If the purpose of this movie was to give the audience a good fright, then it was very, very successful in that area. I didn’t even need to see what the monster looked like to actually fear it. The camera was very effective in bringing that.

Lost: Missing Pieces

Wednesday, January 30th, 2008

lost_logo.jpgHave you had the chance to watch the Missing Pieces video on ABC? If you haven’t, there isn’t actually anything much to miss. But for those who would like to know what they were about here’s a summary:

Episode 1: “The Watch”

Timeline: Jack about to marry Sarah. He receives a watch from his Dad, which was originally his grandfather’s. Jack’s dad never wore the watch because his own father didn’t like his choice of wife. Jack’s dad tells him to be a better father.

Episode 2: “Hurley and Frogurt”

Timeline: In the island, before Hurley and Libby’s planned first date. Hurley is talking to Neil, whom he calls Frogurt. Frogurt was telling him to give it up, since Libby is out of his league. But Hurley insisted he’s seizing the moment with Libby. But then, a few minutes later, she is shot.

Episode 3: “King of the Castle”

Timeline: Jack as prisoner in The Others’ turf. He and Ben are playing chess and Ben tells him something about leaving the island but wanting to come back. He tells Jack: “If that day comes, I hope you remember this conversation” and beats Jack at chess.

Episode 4: “The Deal”

Timeline: Michael with The Others. He meets Juliet for the first time and she talks to her about helping them free Ben from the Losties’ Island.

Episode 5: “Operation: Sleeper”

Timeline: Julie among the Losties. She tells Jack the truth about still working for Ben and the pregnant women and she is worried for Sun (who is pregnant). She tells Jack they have to get off the island.

Episode 6: “Room 23″

Timeline: At The Others’camp. Ben and Juliet have a heated argument over Walt, who Juliet implies Walt may be dangerous. But Ben wants to keep him and is not threatened by a child. Juliet insisted and shows Ben what Walt has done and there they realize he has powerful abilities.

Lost Favorite Character: Ben

Tuesday, January 29th, 2008

ben.jpg Of the men characters, my absolute favorite would have to be Benjamin Linus, or Ben (or Henry), so effectively played by Michael Emerson (who has been nominated for his role).

Ben starts off as Henry and claims he got stranded on the island when this hot air balloon he and his wife were riding deflated and crashed. But we now know the real story behind Henry, who is actually, Ben, the leader of The Others. But there are still some mysteries about him that are not yet answered, like his relationship with Jacob, who seems more powerful than anyone else. Some facts about Ben that we now know are as mind-boggling as the things we dont know. Like, the fact that he can see dead people; or that Jacob, while appearing more powerful, seem to be under Ben’s control (why else would Jacob seek Locke’s help?).

Like Juliet, I like the ambiguous sides to Ben’s character. I find myself sympathizing with him, yet fearing him at the same time. Is his character to be trusted? Is he actually one of the good guys? Is his scheming ways necessary to complete the mission? What, in fact, is the mission?

Lost: Hurley on Season 4

Tuesday, January 29th, 2008

amd_lost1.jpg Excerpts from this New York Daily News interview with Jorge Garcia, who plays Hurley on Lost:

As one of the stars of ABC’s megahit drama “Lost,” Jorge Garcia hears a lot of crazy theories about the true meaning of the crash of Oceanic Air flight 815 and the mysterious island where the survivors are stranded.

“I’ve been stuck on the one where people say that we were all cloned and that the show is about our clones,” Garcia told the Daily News. “They say that the plane landed safely, but we were all cloned in the air and that’s why Jack’s dad walks around, too, because he was cloned in the cargo area.”

Garcia plays ill-fated lottery winner Hurley alongside co-stars Matthew Fox, Josh Holloway, Evangeline Lilly, Terry O’Quinn, Harold Perrineau, Michael Emerson, Naveen Andrews, Henry Ian Cusick, Emilie de Ravin, Daniel Dae Kim, Yunjin Kim and Elizabeth Mitchell, as survivors hoping to be rescued from the Pacific island that holds many secret.

Last May, after the show’s third season, creators Jeffrey Lieber, J.J. Abrams and Damon Lindelof announced that “Lost” would end after 48 more episodes - to air over the course of three seasons. Those final 48 have gotten off to a bumpy start due to the writers strike. So far, they’ve been able to film only eight of this season’s 16-episode order.

“If [the strike] ends soon, there’s still time to go back and finish our season, but there’s also a point of no return,” said Garcia. “The minor benefit is that we’re going to be one of the few shows that has something new coming up. The people that are hungry for us…we’ll at least be able to give them something.”

More after this jump.

Lost Favorite Character: Juliet

Monday, January 28th, 2008

GW220H150.jpgAmong all the castaways, Juliet would have to be my favorite character in the female set.

Juliet Burke is a doctor hired to work with The Others. First introduced to viewers in the episode, A Tale of Two Cities, Juliet seemed kind and gentle, and became the unlikely ally of Jack. Killing one of her companions and plotting to murder their leader, Ben, Juliet showed a cunning and dangerous side to her. After everything that has happened, Juliet’s status is still unknown. Is she really with Jack’s group or is she still in some secret alliance with The Others?

Before arriving at the island, Juliet was a fertility doctor at the Miami Central University Medical Research Laboratory. Her successful experiment on her sister, Rachel, who was unable to bear a child and is with cancer, proved her capacity in her chosen field.

Her main goal at this point is to go back home to her sister, which remains a broken promise from Ben. Juliet will do anything to be able to return home.

Juliet is played by Elizabeth Mitchell. She will be on The View on the 31st by the way, just in time for the season premiere. Here’s a recent interview with Elizabeth Mitchell and the TV Addict:

Why do you think fans embraced your character so openly and the character that Michael plays so openly, when other characters (ahem, Nikki and Paulo…) don’t fare as well?

I really do think it was a setup for the other characters. I think that what happened is that we really fell in love with our survivors. We didn’t want to see more survivors. We wanted to see someone come in who was posing a threat or being something different. I just think we didn’t want to see other people, who weren’t going to be the people that we love, unless they were with the people we love, and I think that’s why they were so smart when they did the Ben and the Juliet characters, that they kind of dropped them in as these great antagonists, we were really worried about Ben and Juliet. And there’s a little bit of, not a thrill, but a sense of unease that goes through us when we see these two people interacting with the people that we actually really love. I think it was a particularly good setup for me. I was very surprised with how it turned out. You wouldn’t think that these characters would be remotely likeable, but the way they’ve written them, they’ve written in that.

Variety: Lost charts its own path

Sunday, January 27th, 2008

Something I read over at Variety and I’m sharing it to the fans here.

lost-msn.jpg Over the past three years, the castaways on “Lost” have managed to survive killer polar bears, competition from “American Idol” and some of the most complicated storylines in network TV history. But this year, they’re facing what may be their toughest enemy yet: the writers strike.

The WGA walkout has put a major monkey wrench in what had been a carefully crafted master plan for “Lost,” designed to take the series through a pre-announced 2010 conclusion. But the strike has forced the net to change all that, while also resulting in a risky timeslot shift and a downsized PR campaign.

As ominous as this sounds, all is not lost for “Lost.”

The skein has proven to be a remarkably resilient weapon for ABC, an enduring hit that’s managed to thrive in the era of digital video recorders. It’s become a poster child for the power of new media to expand a brand beyond the TV screen, dominating the iTunes sales charts and spinning off all manner of Internet and mobile phone extensions.

And “Lost” has also helped redefine sci-fi for primetime, moving the genre beyond the geek core that carried “Star Trek” and “The X-Files” for so many years.

“It’s sort of stealth sci-fi,” says Sci Fi general manager Dave Howe, whose cabler begins airing “Lost” repeats this fall. “It’s never marketed as a sci-fi show, and a lot of people wouldn’t even describe it as one. It hits the sweet spot of what I call the new sci-fi.”

Bottom line: While launching “Lost” this season could be tough, viewers aren’t about to abandon this island any time soon.

“If there is any show where people watch the show and not the time period, it’s ‘Lost,’” says ABC exec VP Jeff Bader.

While he acknowledges moving the show to Thursday is a bit of a challenge, the strike has actually made things easier on that front.

“It’ll have a huge advantage because it’ll be the only original scripted show in the time period,” he says.

ABC also faces another formidable challenge in pleasing the show’s rabid fans, who aren’t shy in sharing their concerns over the show.

Follow the story here.

Don’t forget, Lost premieres this coming Thursday. If you’re curious, you can watch tons of preview via E! or hold off for a couple more days. It’s almost here!

Lost: Oceanic Airlines Flight Resumes

Friday, January 25th, 2008

I am pretty sure Losties have seen a lot of this video and have heard a lot of the buzz going about it. But just the same, I’m still sharing it, in anticipation of the premiere next week.

In relation to this, several billboards have been spotted across states which fans of the series easily recognize. One particular billboard in Knoxville (Sawyer’s hometown) even stirred much controversy when it was hit with vandalism, which was admittedly part of a marketing campaign. Zwire reports:

Mary Porath, a sales representative for the Lamar Advertising Company, acknowledged her company spray painted the word find815.com on the Oceanic airlines billboard located near 815 S. Duff Ave.

“It was one of our people,” said Porath, who works in Waterloo. “We had it done during the middle of the day.” The billboard ties into an alternative reality game “Find815″ for the television show “Lost.” The ABC-show follows the survivors of Oceanic Flight 815, flying from Sydney, Australia, to Los Angeles. The plane crashed on an island in the Pacific Ocean and the Emmy-award winning drama tells the story of 69 survivors as they explore the island. The flight, airline and characters are all fictitious.

Porath said the order for the Oceanic ad was sent from the national corporation and that she knew about it a month or two ago. The order required Lamar to put up the advertisement and have someone spray paint “find815.com”, the central Web site for the game, on it Monday.

Porath would not comment on who bought the ad and how long it is scheduled to run, but she did say it was done to be part of the game.

“I know the billboard was purchased because of the show,” Porath said. “I can’t tell anything more, but that’s what was in mind.”

Pop Candy yesterday also reports that a new billboard has just been spotted in Tallahassee, Florida.

Lost is one series so clever with their viral marketing campaign, no? It’s more than just about watching a television show. It’s really an experience.

Lost: Memorable Quotes from Through The Looking Glass

Friday, January 25th, 2008

Losties, we’ve got a week’s worth of waiting! I just wanna revisit some moments from last season’s finale, Through The Looking Glass, with these memorable quotes. I think I’ll be starting a section on Quotable Quotes for Season 4, yeah?

Hurley: Attention Others. Come in Others. If you’re listening to this, I want you to know that we got you bastards. And unless the rest of you wanna be blown up you best stay away from our beach…

Rose: If I told you that I’d help you with your SOS sign, would you change your mind?
Bernard: No ma’am.
Rose: Then I want you to say it again.
Bernard: Rose…
Rose: Say it, Bernard.
Bernard: I am a dentist, I am not Rambo.

Rose: If you say “live together, die alone” to me, Jack, I’ll punch you in the face.

losties_planning_attack.jpgBen: Let me ask you something, Jack. Why do you wanna leave the Island? What is it that you so desperately want to get back to? You have no one. Your father’s dead, your wife left you, moved on with another man. Can you just not wait to get back to the hospital? Get back to fixing things? It’s twenty seconds now. Just get me the phone, Jack.

Ben: Alex… this is your mother.

Kate: Why are you sticking up for Saywer? He’d never do it for you.
Jack: Because I love you.

Ben: Jack, making that call is the “beginning of the end”

Kate: Hey.
Jack: Hey.
Kate: Saw you on the news. Still pulling people out of burning wreckage, huh.
Jack: Old habits.
Kate: You look terrible.
Jack: Thanks.
Kate: Why’d you call me, Jack?
Jack: I was hoping that you heard… that you would go to the funeral.
Kate: …Why would I go to the funeral?
Jack: Been flying a lot.
Kate: What?
Jack: That golden pass they gave us? Been using it. Every Friday night I fly from L.A. to Tokyo… or Singapore… or Sydney. I get off… have a drink… fly home.
Kate: …why?
Jack: Because I want it to crash, Kate. I don’t care about anyone else on board. Every little bump we hit, turbulence… I actually close my eyes, and I pray… I pray that I can go back.
Kate: This is not going to change…
Jack: No, I’m sick of lying. We made a mistake.
Kate: I have to go. He’s going to be wondering where I am.
Jack: We were not supposed to leave.
Kate: Yes, we were.
Jack: We have to go back, Kate. We have to go back!

Incidentally, ABC is planning on airing the enhanced version of this episode on WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 30 at 9:00 p.m., ET/PT.. What does the enhanced version include? According to the press release it will have text on the lower third of the screen and will “let viewers in” on clues in the show, as well as give back story to catch new viewers up for Season Four. Great, great, great!

Lost: Season 4 Episode 1 Review

Thursday, January 24th, 2008

A couple of people were selected to watch the first episode of Season 4 (lucky them!) and the first review is out, courtesy of Jon Lachonis UGO’s TV Blog. He writes about some minor spoilers and I’ve been tempted to go read it (wasn’t spoiled at all though, so yes, you can go check it out!)

He writes:

lost.s4.1.ben.jpgAs premieres go, “Beginning of the End” is nothing that Lost fans will expect. Instead of opening with a disorienting locale and characters we don’t know, Beginning of the End begins with a headlong slam into a fast moving vignette with characters we know very well. Instead of taking three or four episodes to address the splintered ranks of the Losties, all of the characters are addressed. Perhaps best of all, instead of servicing a single item like previous premieres, “Beginning of the End” does a remarkable job of tying up much of the overlapping issues from the latter quadrant of season 3 and an even better job of setting the pace for season four.

I will tell you is that virtually every theme that becomes important within the first quarter (assuming 16 episodes) of the season are introduced here in complete, well paced, easy to digest nuggets that have the strange effect of swelling within your consciousness and leaving you with the feeling that you have watched not one, but maybe three or four episodes of what you remember Lost to be.

He has ranked the episode with an A+.

Wow. My excitement level has just peaked!

Lost on Marvel Comics

Thursday, January 24th, 2008

logo_marvel_med.gifIn anticipation of the premiere of season four, Marvel Comics and ABC’s Marketing arm has tied up to release bits and pieces of Lost in various Marvel comic books currently on sale in the market. Images and other references or clues to the TV series may be seen on popular comics like Uncanny X-Men, Incredible Hercules, Thunderbolts and Wolverine Origins. From January 23 to January 30th, slogans and posters are just a few of the gimmicks fans should expect to find in between the pages these materials.

Lost, now on its fourth season, will be premiering on January 31st, Thursday night at 9:00 EST.

And of course, we will be here to provide a rundown of that much anticipated episode. Is everyone feeling it already? It’s almost here. One more week to go, people!
