Interview with Terry O’ Quinn

Thursday, June 19th, 2008

terry o quinn john locke Euro TV’s Series Junkies interviews Terry O’ Quinn while he was in Germany to promote the fourth season of Lost (as transcribed in English):

How do you keep up with everything that is going on on «Lost»? There are so many places on the island, so many time frames. How do you cope?

I only have to keep track of John Locke. I only have to know what he knows. In fact, the more difficult challenge is not paying attention to the things I am not supposed to know. John Locke doesn’t have to keep track of everything, because he only knows what he knows.

But you have to keep track where on the time line all these things are supposed to happen to John Locke?

Yes, but in Locke’s case, so far, he has only had the past and the present. As far as I know. Nobody has told me anything else. Both of those things are very clear to me and they are very clear to him. So, it’s really not a challenge to me. It’s more complicated for the fans of "Lost“.

Say What? Libby is Annie?

Wednesday, June 18th, 2008

Was this a slip or is Cynthia Watros just isn’t good with names?

In an interview with Kristin of E! Cynthia refers to Libby as Annie (mark 2:20), which shouldn’t really mean anything on a regular conversation, or in this case, an interview. But hardcore fans of the series, who are so quick at noticing anything unusual or out of the ordinary when it comes to Lost, assume Cynthia may have actually clued us in.

Is Libby Ben’s former childhood sweetheart, Annie?

Cynthia Watros was interviewed in connection with her appearance on NBC’s Fear Itself. Her episode was shown last week, I believe and it apparently was super suspenseful although I wouldn’t know anything about it, as I’ve not watched the show…nor do I plan to sometime in the future. It’s too darn scary, I was told.

Hurley Sings!

Tuesday, June 17th, 2008

hurley.jpgJorge Garcia (Hurley on Lost) shows that he’s more than just a comic relief. The dude is also into singing, did you know that?

Here’s a video of him floating around on Youtube…it’s of Jorge singing “Here’s To You” which is from a small-budget film he’s part of called When We Were Pirates.

When We Were Pirates is directed by Jimmy Hanks. There isn’t a lot of information about the film yet, other than it will start production this month. But you can read an old interview (from April) with Jimmy Hanks on this site.

Some people will probably say this is the first time they’ve seen Jorge/Hurley sing, but he did show a bit of his musicality in Season 3 of Lost. This video might help you remember:

So what do you think? Is he good enough for Grammy’s? Or should he concentrate on winning an Emmy first?

Lost: Variety’s Top 10 Drama Moments of the Year

Tuesday, June 17th, 2008

desandpenny.jpgThe Constant, Lost Season Four’s fifth episode, was picked as one of Variety’s Top Ten Drama Moments of the 2007-2008 season.

LOST
“The Constant,” Feb. 28

Just as a second-season addition (Michael Emerson as Ben) emerged as the most intriguing character on “Lost,” a second-season couple (Henry Ian Cusack as Desmond and Sonya Walger as Penny) became arguably the show’s greatest romance. Their time-traveling, globe-spanning, over-the-phone reconnection epitomized what “Lost” is fundamentally about.

The list also includes, the finale of House, episodes of The Wire, Mad Men, Damages, In Treatment, Breaking Bad, Friday Night Lights, Dexter and Big Love.

The full list is found here.

There’s also a photogallery for all the shows mentioned. Desmond and Penny’s photo looks candid, as if taken from behind the scenes.

Fringe: A First Look

Monday, June 16th, 2008

While Lost is on hiatus, I’ll also be blogging about one of the most anticipated shows next season, and it happens to be another JJ Abrams masterpiece.

Fringe Pilot episode.jpg

Fringe a series starring Australian actress Anna Torv, former teen star Joshua Jackson and John Noble from Lord of the Rings. Their characters are brought together as a result of a mysterious event.

Olivia Dunham (Anna Torv) is an FBI Agent who is called to investigate an airplane that lands at the Logan airport with every passenger dead, their bodies melting away. Hoping to find some answers, Agent Dunham tracks down a former scientist, Dr. Walter Bishop (John Noble), who is now institutionalized at a mental hospital. In oder to meet him, she has to seek the help of his estranged son, Peter (Joshua), who is characterized as a Sawyer-type, but with an IQ of 190. And together they uncover something mysterious, potentially dangerous.

Without spoiling away anything, I can say that the two-hour pilot, budgetted at $10 Million, delivers all that is expected. The visual effects are top-notch. It will be one people will talk about when the series begins airing when the new season opens in September.

And while Fringe is tapped as a horror series, it also is made light with a touch of humor, mostly coming from the cooky old scientist.

The actors appear to gel well together; the chemistry projects very well screen, every bit of them. Anna Torv will probably be one of the faces to watch next season. She is radiant and charming on screen; she is likeable.

Other cast members include Mark Valley from Boston Legal, Kirk Acevedo from Band of Brothers and Lance Reddick, who most Lost fans will recognize as Matthew Abaddon.

Just a quick stop to let you know…(a Lost roundup)

Thursday, June 12th, 2008

michael emerson.jpgYou can feed your questions to Michael Emerson as Lostpedia is going to interview him. —- You have around 2-3 weeks to submit questions; as I’ve said before, I will probably be unable to ask every question submitted, so don’t be offended if your question isn’t asked. What you have to remember is that Michael has probably been asked all the obvious questions before, so try and think of something original to ask.

You can “Oooh and” Ahh over babies here. Aaron is baby #1.

Timelooptheory has updated its website with newer point to ponder. Aaack! Head. Aching. Real. Bad.

Libby (Cynthia Watros) was on Fear Itself last night. Haven’t seen it but did you? And have you watched Daniel Dae Kim on Andromeda Strain?

Funny, funny video on Jon Stewart. - Wyatt Cenac thinks the Democratic primaries are as boring as the second season of “Lost.”

Lost is nominated in the TCA Awards.

Naveen Andrews is a Guitar Hero. I read about him playing at the Roxy’s two weeks ago (the night of the season finale). Sayid wasn’t watching, he was jamming with other music artists. Also, read his interview with Digital Spy here, excerpts below:

When we last spoke you said you knew how the show would end, “geographically” speaking.
“Yeah, the island. I still presume it’s going to be the island. I think season five’s going to be Matthew [Fox, Jack] rounding up us lot to go back to the island, or whoever he can get to go back - maybe some people don’t, because they can’t be f**king bothered - and they go back and then there’s this big kind of conflagration on the island. Will good triumph over evil? I don’t know. It’s just a rough idea.”

So you know nothing solid about the future seasons, then?
“It’s been like this from day one. They’ve never told us anything.”

Do you want to know?
“At first, yeah. It’s like your spiritual development. You’re like three steps forward, five steps back. You’d think after four years you’d be used to being kept in the dark but every now and then you do get frustrated and think ‘come on, for f**k’s sake, tell us something!’”

“(Exhaling deeply through his lips) This is a… this is a trip wire. Move it, and… boom. This is dummy wiring. If you cut the wrong one… boom. This is multiple firing systems. You disable one, and the next one… boom. Uh, this… battery’s the power source. If you disconnect it…”

—Desmond

“Boom.”
—Jin

“It’s not an Island. It’s a place where miracles happen.”
“Lie to them, Jack. If you do it half as well as you lie to yourself, they’ll believe you.”

—John Locke

“There is no such thing as miracles.”

—Jack

“John, why don’t you watch this very informative video, and I’ll take care of some business.”
“I’m here to tell you that the Island won’t let you come alone…You have to do it together. All of you.”
“If you mean time-travelling bunnies? Yes.”
“May I have my weapon back?”

—Christian Shepherd

“Don’t bring him back, Kate. Don’t you dare bring him back!”

—Claire

“You know, when you came back, I was waiting for one of you to come see me, but… nobody did.”
—Walt

“Just do it, Freckles.”
—Sawyer

“Yes, you do know, Mr. Widmore… just like you know we’ve been lying all this time about where we were and what happened to us there. You and I have common interests. When you’re ready to discuss them…”

Lost Finale: Charlotte

Tuesday, June 10th, 2008

charlotte_born_on_the_island_of_lost.jpg

MILES: I’m surprised you wanna leave.
CHARLOTTE: Sorry?
MILES: It’s just weird. You know, after all that time you spent trying to get back here.
CHARLOTTE: What do you mean, get back here?
MILES: …What do I mean?

CHARLOTTE: I’m gonna stay, Daniel… for now, anyway.
FARADAY: Charlotte… there is no “for now”. If you don’t come with me, “for now” could be forever.
CHARLOTTE: Nothing’s forever.
FARADAY: Why?

CHARLOTTE: Would it make any sense if I told you I was still looking for where I was born?

What she said to Faraday in the final episodes, about finding out where she was actually born, came out of nowhere to me. But it shouldn’t be surprising to learn. Charlotte, since being introduced as one of the freighter folks this season, still remains a mystery to most of us. What her purpose is for becoming part of the team is rather vague. She was working on the deserts of Tunisia, when she learned of the wreckage and was dumbfounded about it. She was digging up skeletons of a polar bear there (a bear with a Dharma logo on its collar)…and those are the closest Lost connection we can relate her to.

So, who is Charlotte for the island? What about her past is part of it? If she was born there, does she have the same abilities as Desmond?

Some theories point to her as Annie, Ben’s childhood sweetheart although it would appear she’s too young to be her. Some even say she could be their daughter. Annie has the same red hair as Charlotte’s, which really doesn’t prove a lot but it does make you stop and think. An ongoing debate about Charlotte is taking place here, if you’re interested to join in the fun.

Lost Finale: Ben

Monday, June 9th, 2008

ben and frozen donkey wheel.jpg

Photo from Lostpedia

Continuing with our finale breakdown…

I have to acknowledge the obvious: Ben is such a complicated character. I really wouldn’t know the motives of his actions and what he is trying to accomplish. If I take the time to sit down and go over his character’s doings on the island in each episode, if I try and make sense of why he did all that, I’d get a headache. I actually did. Not ten minutes after doing so….my brows cringed together and I stopped before my head exploded.

So with Ben, I really have more questions than theories and assumptions.

Did Ben do the ultimate sacrifice when he turned the wheel for the sake of saving the island? He mentioned that he’s the one who is supposed to do the task (even as Jacob told Locke what they’re supposed to do) because whoever does it can never come back to the island. Why would he then want to leave the only place we could consider his comfort zone?

It has been implied that Locke is the “true leader” of the troop Ben was herding and now it seems Locke has fully embraced that, therefore displacing Ben. It felt like Ben was banished from the island and if you look at it that way — it’s kinda sad for him. But did he do this to prove something to Jacob? Can you sense the desperation in his actions? Or was that really his destiny, a plan to correct the course of the future? Is Locke actually the rightful leader?

Did what happen to him (getting off the island, never to return) also happen to Widmore in the past? Is this the reason why Widmore is hell bent on finding the island he claims is his (which meant Ben staged a coup and took something from Widmore….like the leadership of the island)?

10 Things Every Manager Should Learn from “LOST”

Monday, June 9th, 2008

christian_and_c4.jpgInteresting article from the HR World which touches on lessons to take from Lost and applied to an actual workplace.

Make alliances. The survivors of “LOST” have found much help from outside sources by forming alliances. Sayid’s relationship with Rousseau has been particularly helpful, as she’s been the group’s native guide to the island in many episodes. Even Michael, in a bloody and roundabout way, has worked with Ben to help protect the people on the island.

These sort of relationships can be translated into a management setting in the form of knowledge-sharing between departments, such as cross training. The bonds created by forming alliances between groups can prove useful when your team needs help.

Find success as a team. Throughout “LOST,” Jack has constantly reminded the survivors that on the island, you “live together, die alone.” In the days immediately following the crash, characters worked as individuals, fending for themselves unsuccessfully. But when they started to collaborate, their lives began to flourish. In a larger group as well as in small teams, the survivors have worked to find resources, overcome personal difficulties, protect themselves and solve some of the mysteries of the island.

As a manager, you should encourage your team to band together in this way so that they can achieve something greater than they’d be able to on their own.

Follow your instincts. On the island as well as in business, it’s not always easy to see the truth behind the matter, so it’s important that you trust your instincts. When Ben infiltrated the survivors under the guise of his own tragedy, many were easily swayed, but Sayid knew that Ben was not to be trusted. Without Sayid’s good judgement, Ben could have caused much more harm than he actually did.

As a manager, it’s important that you trust your gut when making decisions for your team. If something doesn’t feel right to you, take a closer look.

Follow the rest of the suggestions here.

Lost Finale: Michael and Walt

Saturday, June 7th, 2008

grown_up_walt_on_lost.jpg Much has been reported about Harold Perrineau’s exit on Lost, yet again. And it seems the way the actor spoke of it, Michael’s death is his character’s imminent ending. Christian Shepard suddenly appearing to him in the freighter, telling him it’s done, marked that.

Still, there is a theory that we won’t see the last of his character. He could be dead, but like all the others, Michael will reappear to someone.

How he died is seen as a redemption from mistakes he has made on the island in the past (killing Ana Lucia and Libby, betraying the other Losties). There was closure…on that level. There was even closure between him and Jin at some point. But perhaps one of the misses I could consider on this show is that Michael and Walt never got theirs (closure). I think that that would have been a much more important “mission” for Michael.

michael and walt.jpg

Does Walt even know his dad is dead? Did Jeremy Bentham aka Locke tell him anything? We are going to see those encounters between JB-Locke and grown up Walt next season, won’t we? And why didn’t the 06ers even try to get in touch with Walt when they got off the island? Why wasn’t Hurley forthcoming with him when Walt came for a visit? Could Hurley have been seeing not just Charlie’s ghost but also Michael’s?
