Here are some fan reactions about “The Brig” from Pop Candy:

So the fact that John couldn’t kill his father but he had no problem “killing” Mikhail makes me think, once again, that he knew, in advance, that Mikhail was never going to die by being pushed into the fence.

So Locke has some magic healing powers, eh? Well guess who has one of Locke’s body parts in him? And no, that question has absolutely no homoerotic overtones. I don’t think we’ve seen the last of Locke’s dad.

My theory is that Juliet knows about the fake flight 815 crash discovery, so therfore she thinks it’s impossible for anyone to be looking for them due to the media (in the real world) saying the flight was found, with bodies, all deceased. What she might not know is the Desmond/Penny angle, therefore she can only equate someone looking for them as family/friends of the 815 passengers. Because she knows that everyone on the mainland thinks everyone on 815 is dead, she may have let Jack know this (or he found out via Ben/other means during his 10 days with the Others), and that is the secret that they don’t want to tell Kate yet, and everyone else for that matter (Jack’s “we have a lot of catching up to do” line in the previews for next week), because it would obviously diminsh morale and hope for a rescue on the island.

Cindy the stewardess - she said “they” have been waiting for Locke. Was she an “other” on the plane and therefore maybe instrumental in the plot, or was she brainwashed after the Others took the Tailies? I cannot imagine why a regular person who crashed on a beach and was then kidnapped would be waiting for someone else that the kidnappers said was “special.” Wouldn’t she just want to go home???

BEST.EPISODE.EVER.?!?

Since I don’t like to write novels I’ll just say this…
Now that Sawyer has killed umm…Sawyer, he can get off the island. The producers said all the people on the island are “lost” in their lives and have something they need to solve. By Sawyer killing the guy who has ruined his life he has finished what he set out to do and completed the task for which he was in Australlia. I’m now sure that somehow Sawyer will beable to get off the island.

Very goos thoughts. Especially that about John not wanting to kill. He did just mercilessly push Mikhail into the fence. That doesn’t add up. What do you think??

With all that happened in this rather packed episode, I believe the most important thing said throughout the entire episode was desmonds line to charlie “by my last count you have killed more of them than they have of you”. This lends support to any number of theories from desmond being an other to the others being the real good guys as ben told michael on the docks at then end of season 2. I think that line could go down as extremely telling in the next 4 weeks

Wait, I’ve been thinking about this. let’s not sell Juliet short on her deception abilities. She totally lied to Sun about the father. Why wouldn’t she? She left a message to Ben that said the same news she’d given Sun, but if that was true, she’s not getting off that island, baby. She’d want to tell Sun the same thing so her story would be able to corroborate. BUT, if she found out that Sun got pregnant OFF the island and LIED about it, then her experience about Claire would tell her- since the baby survived - she can settle her deal with Ben and get her butt gone. She’s just making it look like she’s fixing the problem and setting herself up to “Save” Sun from the island’s conception-death problem.

Forger those others and that they still won’t be able to get pregnant, she’s every woman for herself. Plus the double bonus of getting to make Sun very happy about Jun being the father.

Why would Juliet say anything other than that Sun got pregnant on the island? She needs to prove that hero factor to everyone - otherwise, she’s stuck there, baby.

psychoitaliano wrote:
Alright, here we go with a theory: The Losties were not on the correct plane. Those particular people were directed to the plane they were on for a purpose. They are all connected, that’s why they are all on the plane together. The people on the island were not told ahead of time what was happening because it is still an experiment to see how these people would react to one another.

mikepcfl wrote:
Some people have skirted around it, but not come out and said it. If The Others or Dharma faked the plane wreckage to convince the world all the passengers of 815 were dead, they can never let anyone off the island. There is no way they would let Jack leave and there is no way that Michael and Walt made it home.

Nexus-6 wrote:
My theory - parachute girl was part of a mission to reach the island and contact the Others after communications went down (the satelite dish).
Just look at Patchy’s expression when he runs through the jungle and reaches the group. He is totally shocked to see the guys - he expected parachute girl and assumed she had set off the flair.

There are a lot more great ones, so check them out here if you have a chance!

Fan Thoughts on “Left Behind”

Tuesday, April 10th, 2007

Here are some really great thoughts from fans dicussing last week’s episode on Pop Candy:

bfmstanford wrote:
One more thought - I wondered why Juliet always brought the food to all the prisoners. Now I think its because Benry wanted the Losties to trust Juliette - sort of the thing where the hostage idetifies with the hostage taker. Now Benry’s plan is coming to fuition (sp?) with Juilette joining the Losties camp.

aries wrote:
I bet Kate is pregnant (Sawyer we know can impregnate) and that is what the others wanted. That is why Juliet is staying close to her. Remember that is Juliets specialty.

BTD Greg wrote: (only a partial quote)
What does Locke mean when he says that they captured him, but “only temporarily? Does he mean he intends to escape, or that they have already told him he’s free to go. This next part is pure speculation, but I suspect that Ben is essentially making a play to humor Locke by moving the Others out of Othersville. Locke doesn’t like their modern, suburban existence, and Ben wants to convince Locke that he’s willing to do what it takes so that Locke can commune with the island for him in order to be healed.

Locke admitted explicitly that he doesn’t want to go home. He also said that the Others told Locke what Kate did. Locke didn’t appear to me to be judgmental about this fact—he probably believes that the island has provided Kate with a blank slate, just as it did for him.

This episode has a rapture, of sorts, like the “Left Behind series of Christian novels. The Others and the “good people have “disappeared, leaving everyone else behind to suffer tribulations.

That is such good stuff! There are many more here, if you’d like to check them out. It is possible that Kate is pregnant, and that would explain Juliet’s interest in Kate particularly. And I hadn’t thought of the Left Behind book series. What a great observation!

Locke Theory

Wednesday, March 21st, 2007

A lot of us have been asking the question here, “What is going on with John Locke?” I’ve been a little suspicious; others have commented that John’s just sticking to his original, inquisitive, button-pushing self. However, I’m not so sure. Maybe we’ll find out more in tonight’s episode that features a Locke flashback. In the meantime, Andreas over at The Lost Blog has written a nice article on John Locke and his strange behavior. Check it out here.

“Faulty leap in logic”

Wednesday, February 21st, 2007

This is what Damon Lindelof would call the assumption that all character flashbacks have been time travels. DocArzt over at The Tail Section wants us all to be clear on that.

Also, Jeff Jensen at Entertainment Weekly discusses “Flashes Before Your Eyes.” Here’s a little taste:

This trippy tale of time travel and romantic fatalism seems to have inflicted a Perplexity Pox upon the Lost Nation. Symptoms: head-scratching, head-shaking, just plain headaches. Did Desmond really travel through time — or was it all a hallucination? What was up with Ms. Hawking, the creepy old lady in the ring store who knew everything about Desmond’s unstuck-in-time plight? And how does any of this explain Desmond’s flashes-of-the-future, which portend to purport Charlie’s certain death? My interactions with Lost watchers this week have turned into proverbial house calls: ”What was that about?! Do you have ANY idea?!”

And of course I do. Several ideas — and one wild theory. First, however, let’s establish some context, including a clarification or two from the co-writer of the episode, executive producer Damon Lindelof:

1. The episode is essentially an ironic riff on some Big Ideas put forth by Desmond’s namesake, the Scottish philosopher David Hume. Those big ideas include a skeptical posture regarding the notions of interlocking cause-and-effect and seemingly miraculous phenomenon.
2. According to Lindelof, the events that transpired in Desmond’s flashback ”did NOT happen ‘’solely in Desmond’s imagination.”
3. If Desmond truly did travel back in time, says Lindelof, then ”ANY changes he made during this series of ‘flashbacks’ indeed DID happen… and thusly, the ramifications of said changes might reverberate later.”
4. It would be a faulty leap in logic to assume that because Desmond’s flashbacks were a form of time travel, then ALL flashbacks on Lost have been a form of time travel. ”I don’t really see anything in the show to support that,” says Lindelof.
5. Otherwise, the episode is open to interpretation.

Jensen is also great with theories. He has several concerning “Flashes Before Your Eyes.” I’ll give you the “nutshell” versions and you can read the rest for yourself if you’re interested.

THE ”IT’S IN THE TITLE, STUPID” HYPOTHESIS
IN A NUTSHELL: Desmond never really traveled back in time.

THE MINDF— HYPOTHESIS (Doc Jensen’s Paranoid Conspiracy Theory of the Week!)
IN A NUTSHELL: Desmond really didn’t travel through time, and he really doesn’t have precognitive powers — but he’s been brainwashed into thinking otherwise.

THE DR. MANHATTAN HYPOTHESIS (also known as: The ”Desmond Goes Jedi” Conjecture)
IN A NUTSHELL: Desmond really did travel backward — and forward — in time.

THE ”DESMOND IS GOD” POSTULATION (Doc Jensen’s ”Leave ‘em even more confused than they were before” theory of the week!)
IN A NUTSHELL: The point of ”Flashes Before Your Eyes” wasn’t to suggest that Desmond traveled through time, or that he was brainwashed by Dharma or The Others — it was to suggest that Desmond is subconsciously shaping reality on The Island, and by extension — the history of the world!

Here are some of the most interesting quotes from fan discussions over at Pop Candy. Enjoy!

So my theory: We know from Desmond’s first episode that he maintained communication with Penny after they separated…or at least tried to. Is it possible that maybe Desmond told Penny about the Island and that’s how she knew to look for it? I mean how else would she know that Desmond was on a remote island somewhere in the Pacific? I think he told her that he would be stranded there and that she should look for a large burst of electromagnetic energy.

Having just moved back home from Edinburgh, Scotland, I had some college courses there in “David Hume Tower”….if you noticed, the jeweler called him “Desmond David Hume”-not to insult any intelligences, but David Hume is a Scottish philosopher, historian, & economist-go to wikipedia & search his name b/c it’s very interesting….especially the part titled “Free will versus determinism”….

One cool thing no one has said yet is that when Charlie appears as a street musician in Desmond’s flashback he’s singing Wonderwall by Oasis. These lyrics, which Charlie sings right around the time a confused Desmond shows up, are just slightly pertinent: “I said maybe / You’re gonna be the one that saves me..” Turns out Desmond isn’t the only one with amazing foresight, eh?

So, what do you think? There are many more here if you want to check them out!

Interesting Fan Theories

Monday, February 12th, 2007

I just love reading through fan comments after a Lost episode. Here are a few from Pop Candy.

I think Tom and Ben are a couple, and Juliet tried to impregnate Ben as she did the mouse. Instead of a baby, they got a tumour.

The way the scene was done where Tom let Kate know he had no interest in watching her shower made me think they’re introducing a gay character. After that, I saw the way Tom clearly cares about Ben…yeah. They’re in love.

Burke–Edmund Burke, philosopher and political figure. He wrote a treatise on anarchism (among other works), and fought for political parties, so that the unlimited control of the monarchy could be stopped. Hmmm…perhaps Juliet Burke will lead an uprising against the unlimited control of Ben?

Posted by: JazzMatt727
I don’t know about everyone else, but my hunch is that the man that was recruiting Juliet for “Mittelos Bioscience” could possibly be the mysterious Jacob that we’ve been hearing about for the past few episodes. It was also very interesting to find out that Juliet is a captive of The Others as well. Great start to the rest of the season, and I can’t wait to find out what happens!!

Someone asked why Ben didn’t just have the big “magical” island heal his tumor. Let’s not forget that A) the supposed magical power of the island isn’t universal (Echo died, Boone died, etc), and B) the supposed magical power of the island is IMHO up for debate. Common belief is that it was not instrumental in Sun’s pregnancy (so much as her lover probably was). Also, we still don’t know what caused Locke’s paralysis (if it was psychological, it significantly reduces the “miracle” of Locke being able to walk). Jury is out on Rose.

Do we know for sure that Rachel was on chemo? Could her condition have been CAUSED by the fertility drug? Also…interesting that her name was Rachel (yet another biblical reference). Wasn’t Rachel the wife of Jacob? Also, if memory serves, Alvar Hanso has some blurb up on thehansofoundation.org and he talks about his daughter…Rachel Blake. Rachel is a fairly common name, but it is interesting.

I wonder if Tom was referring to the “purple sky” when Desmond hit the failsafe key…or perhaps something from the original “Incident.”

There’s some interesting stuff there, and there’s more here if you need/want more.

Lost, the Bible, and kidneys

Wednesday, December 13th, 2006

What do these have in common? Well, one might think they have absolutely nothing in common, but Ella over at The Tail Section might beg to differ. She writes the following:

I can’t ignore the human organ coincidence of Locke’s kidney transplant and Jack’s choice in puncturing Ben’s kidney during the surgery cliffhanger. Of all the things Jack could have done to buy some time, he went straight for the kidney, of all organs. Do the writers just love kidneys as much as me? Or, could there be some deeper symbolic relevance?

She goes on to explore the Biblical connections to kidneys AND Lost’s storylines and characters. She also discusses Benjamin and Jacob from the Old Testament and their possible connections to Lost’s Ben and Jacob. It’s pretty interesting stuff, so check out the entire article if you’re interested.

Who’s Jacob??

Friday, December 8th, 2006

Let’s think back to the fall season finale. In that show, we heard Pickett reference someone named Jacob who had a list on which Jack was not. (Read my entire recap of that episode here.) We’ve been speculating for a while now about who this Jacob could be.

Doc Jensen at EW.com has published his theory about who Jacob may be. Read it after the jump. (more…)

Spies Like Us

Tuesday, November 21st, 2006

In the realm of theories, Jeff Jensen’s newest one makes quite a bit of sense. Could some of the Others be a collection of secret agents from the U.S. and the Soviet Union sent to the island to figure out what the Hanso Foundation was up to with its Dharma Initiative? Jensen’s explanation is this:

Everything about the Hanso Foundation and the Dharma Initiative is a hoax — an elaborate lie created by Cold War-era utopian idealist/activist prankster Alvar Hanso, designed to undermine BOTH the United States of America and the Soviet Union. His idea: trick both countries into thinking he found a way to save the world. His hope: force the superpowers into diverting their attention away from each other and toward his mysterious enterprise. Call it ”Operation: Venus Flytrap.” The whole point of Dharma was to lure agents from both countries (like Kelvin and his old Hatchmate, Radzinsky, who per this theory could have been a KGB agent) to infiltrate the Hanso Foundation, become part of the Initiative, and get to the island in order to find out what the hell was going on there.

Ironically, those who believe that Lost is actually just a big waste of time are more right than they know. Because that’s basically the true purpose of Dharma: to waste the time and energy of the two superpowers leading the world toward ruin.

IMPLICATIONS Could the Others be a collective of secret agents, American and Russian, who came to the island, saw through the deception, but for various reasons abandoned their respective missions, banded together, and are now hiding out from their spymasters?

michael-emerson.jpgCould this explain why Ben told Sawyer that they were better con men than he could ever be — because they are all spies, trained in the art of deception and subterfuge?

And could it be that a long, long time ago, the U.S. and the Soviet Union figured out Hanso’s ruse, but instead of busting him, have co-opted his enterprise for their own benefit? Could the island be a place where they banish bad agents and other undesirables? Or could it even be a place like The Village in The Prisoner — the place where they send People With Secrets in order to figure out what secrets they’re hiding?

Or what if one of the castaways is a sleeper agent with a secret mission, and when he finds the target of this mission, a suppressed memory will activate inside the mind of this secret someone, and his flashback will reveal everything?

I’m thinking this secret someone could be Sayid. naveen-andrews.jpg

And I’m thinking he’s been sent to the island to kill Patchy.

To refresh your memory, Kelvin was the guy who got Sayid into torture when he was in the war. Kelvin’s also the guy who was in the hatch with Desmond, and Desmond ended up killing him when he found out Kelvin was planning to escape. So, there is a connection between Kelvin and Sayid. But why would Sayid want Patchy (Radzinsky) dead? Are we agreed that Patchy may be Radzinsky, or is he someone else?

I’m pretty much convinced that the Dharma Initiative was a big psychological experiment, but the ramifications of that experiment surely extend way past psychology. Too many people are on that island now. It seems the experiment (if that’s even what it is) has gotten out of hand.

Any thoughts?

What does it all mean??

Wednesday, November 15th, 2006

That’s the question I seem to be asking myself more and more lately, and not just about this show. But I know all you really care about is the show, right? So, what is the purpose of the island? Why are the Others there? Why was the Dharma Initiative there? We know that there are tons of theories, so here are a couple more to fill this long hiatus time…

What’s up with the black smoke?

Tuesday, November 14th, 2006

According to Pop Candy, here are some theories:

“The smoke appeared behind Eko right after what appeared to be Eko’s brother disappeared. The smoke also appeared right before the altar boy and the other men attacked Eko. It seems easy to assume that the smoke can take human form–it explains why Christian appeared to Jack, the horse appeared to Kate, Dave appeared to Hurley, and even why Walt appeared to Shannon. As we know from last season’s Eko flashback, the smoke synthesizes your past and then apparently uses its knowledge to its benefit.”

Ooooo, so the smoke uses your past against you? And it takes human form to really mess with your mind? That’s pretty cruel. But its ability to take human (or animal) form does explain a lot of the other weird occurrences on the island.

“As for the black “smoke”, my office mates and I are debating whether it is man-made or the devil (following the “the island is purgatory theme”). I’m still leanging towards the black smoke was created (on purpose or accidentally) by the Dharma Initiative and is now completely out of their control, much like the genetically altered polar bears that can live on the tropical island.”

So, maybe the Dharma Initiative created the smoke and now has lost control over it. Hmmm, I like it. But what could it have been created for? What would the Dharma Initiative use it for?

Thoughts??

Here’s the scene where Eko faced down the smoke monster and we got our first real look at it. I thought we might need a refresher.

This guy is good!

Thursday, November 9th, 2006

Seriously, Jeff Jensen at EW.com has some fantastic theories! His latest really makes some sense! Here’s a little of his theory:

Remember all the speculation last season about the possibility that maybe there were two groups of Others? To wit, there was one group out in the jungle still connected to The Dharma Initiative, and another group opposed to Dharma, and both were harrassing (or maybe helping) our castaways.

1. Two months ago — that is to say, when Oceanic 815 came tumbling down from the sky — ALL of the Others lived together in an idyllic commune, to the north of the island. Let’s call this larger body The Collective.

2. The leader of the Collective is the mysterious He/Him, referred to by Mr. Friendly and “Henry Gale” last season. He/Him is all about the lists, the kidnapping of the kids, and the fixation with good people/bad people. This leader could very well be “Patchy.”

2a. My theory? The Collective was originally part of Dharma, whose purpose is to save the world from destruction by bringing people to “enlightenment.”

Interested? Well, it gets better! Click here to read more. And tell me what you think!
