Lost Recap - Expose (March 28)
Seriously, the writers and producers never cease to amaze me, and I’m so glad I did not see this episode coming. I tried not to read too many spoilers for this episode, and I enjoyed the episode more because of that.
We finally found out who Nikki and Paulo are, but I’m still unsure of their significance on the island and to the rest of the Losties. Maybe that will come later… Anyway, Nikki and Paulo are con artists and murderers. Nikki was an actress in a “relationship” with an older wealthy man, Howie. Paulo was his chef. They poisoned Howie and stole his diamonds, worth $8 million. They got on Oceanic flight 815, and they and their diamonds crashed on the island.
Here’s what I liked:
The show did a great job showing how Nikki and Paulo had been there the entire time. They perfectly recreated scenes from past episodes, and I appreciated the attention to detail there.
It was cool that Nikki used the Medusa spider to paralyze Paulo so that she could find the diamonds. It’s unfortunate that she didn’t remember Dr. Artz’s warning that the spider’s pheromones would cause all the other spiders on the island to flock toward the scent. Not too smart.
I loved Sawyer’s multiple questions about who the heck these two were anyway! He’d said it to Nikki before during the ping-pong game, but, like Amy mentioned on the last post, I love it when shows send little messages to fans like that letting them know they’ve been heard.
Seeing Ben and Juliet discuss how they were going to get Jack to perform Ben’s surgery was fantastic! I felt like I was behind the scenes for a minute, and that everything we’ve been speculating about Ben’s manipulative nature was confirmed.
Finally, Nikki and Paulo were buried alive! And, as Joshy C. mentioned before, things on the island don’t stay buried, and I can’t wait to see how this is going to play out.
What I didn’t like was that I kept waiting to see WHY Nikki and Paulo are important. Yes, their story is interesting, but there are a lot of interesting stories on the show already. So, I was disappointed that their importance wasn’t made as clear as I’d been led to believe by previous comments I’ve read from the producers. I remember one of the producers saying that Nikki and Paulo would become pivotal characters in the mythology of the show, so I am still waiting for that before I can really care about them.
Overall, this was a different kind of episode, and I enjoyed being completely surprised. What did y’all think?
And I can’t wait for next week to see Kate and Juliet fight, fight, fight!! Yea!

You’re right, Holli, we have no clue why they were supposed to be important. I didn’t think of that until you said it. I guess I just watched the episode as a fun little backstory with a couple of juicy parts. Sometimes in episodes like this I forget to try and figure out the mythology. About nothing staying buried, though, you guys don’t think they get out of the graves do you? Wasn’t Rodrigo quoted as saying he’s done for good with the show?
Also, loved seeing Shannon and Boone. I forgot that I even missed them.
