Lost Recap - Greatest Hits (May 16)

by Holli

“We stop hiding. We stop running. We stop living in fear. We’re gonna blow them all to hell.” What a great speech from Jack! I don’t know about y’all, but I’m glad the Jack I liked is back. I didn’t like worrying about whether or not I could trust him. More from last night’s episode follows, so if you haven’t seen it, stop reading!

So, Jack’s plan is to move everybody off the beach and go up to the radio tower to try to call Nadia’s ship. Since the Others are coming earlier than originally planned, (and they were warned by Carl, remember him?) they’re going to blow up the tents that Juliet has marked. And they’ll need three shooters to detonate the dynamite. It’ll be Sayid, Jin, and Bernard.

There were so many great lines from last night, but my favorite one has to be from Charlie. And since the episode was Charlie-centered, I found that appropriate: “Why does everything have to be such a secret? How about some openness for a change?” I could just imagine the writers discussing all the fan complaints when writing that line. I love it!

So, the communications ARE being blocked by the Others. Charlie learns he’s supposed to die so that everyone can be rescued, so he volunteers to swim down to the underwater station, The Looking Glass, to flip a switch that will turn off the blocking device. We think he’s going to die, but he finds there’s an underwater room, climbs out of the water, starts yelling about how happy he is to be alive, and then out come some Others with guns. Evidently Desmond didn’t see THAT in his flash!

Before Charlie left, however, he left his family ring to little Aaron. I have to admit, I sighed aloud at that little gesture. Naomi informed Charlie that since his “death,” his band released a Greatest Hits album, and it was a huge hit! So, poor Charlie finds fame after he’s “dead.” Also, I loved the five best moments of Charlie’s life. I thought that was really sweet.

Lingering questions:
1. Why was Alex killing a rabbit? That is what that was, right?
2. Could the Others not hear the big explosion that Jack and Danielle set up? That didn’t seem very smart to me. And was it just for dramatic effect for the Losties, or were they testing it out first?
3. Is The Looking Glass station where Jack was kept at first?
4. What did Alex mean when she asked of Ben, “Is he my father?”
5. In Charlie’s flashback where he was singing “Wonderwall” and saved the girl being robbed, was that Sayid’s girlfriend?? What’s her name?

Next week:
1. Does Jack tell Kate he loves her?
2. Will Desmond save Charlie?

I really enjoyed this episode, folks. What did you think??

    1. When she ran over to Carl, he said something like, “Weren’t you bringing a rabbit?” I’m assuming she was bringing him dinner. Or maybe she was mad at Ben and killing his pet rabbit with the red eyes. :)
    2. Good point. Seemed risky.
    3. No. Jack was held in the Hydra, which is on the whole other side of the island. This is a new hatch that we’ve never seen before.
    4. Remember Sayid told her she looked like her mother. She’s probably starting to doubt.
    5. Nadia.

If I were you, I wouldn’t trust Jack or Juliette just yet. I just have this bad feeling that Juliette has been pulling the strings more than we realize, and maybe everything that is happening right now is all a trap. I think we’re going to be surprised in the finale.

Regarding Desmond’s vision: We all ASSUMED, including Charlie and Desmond, that he would swim down into a flooded hatch, flip the switch, then drown because he couldn’t get back up in time. Desmond may have interpreted his vision like this, after hearing the mission from Sayid, but in reality the hatch was not flooded. I have two thoughts on this: By telling Charlie how he was going to die, things changed on the island. I’m not sold on that though. More likely, I think that Desmond’s vision was correct. It’s just his assumed timing and circumstance that was wrong. Perhaps the hatch WILL flood, and then Charlie will drown right after hitting that switch. That would be my guess.

I still don’t know if Jack is on the up and up, either.

One nitpicky continuity thing — when Alex was skinning the rabbit (ew) she had blood all over her hands. When Ben handed her the gun back, she had blood all over her hands. When she kissed Carl, her hands were nice and clean. Weird continuity mistake? Or meaningful?

When the girls came out with guns at Charlie, I literally said, “Seriously? Another hatch with more mystery people? Come on.” I can’t wait to see next week’s episode, though. It looks great.
