Lost Recap - The Man from Tallahassee (March 21)

by Holli

Is it just me, or are we getting a lot of information in these last couple of episodes? I’m not sure I can do a full recap for this one, so I’ll just hit the highlights, character by character.

Let’s start with Jack: We’ve been wondering, is he brainwashed? Has he turned to the Others’ side? Is he just playing along? He tells Kate that he made a deal with them so that he could go home. He says he’ll come back for her. She wonders why he’s trusting them, and he tells her he trusts them because she told him to. Ouch.

Jack was supposed to be leaving the island via the submarine, and that brings us to Locke. Those of us who have thought that Locke doesn’t ever want to be rescued got some confirmation last night when Locke blew up the submarine! Locke’s been blowing up a lot of things lately, and his whole point seems to be to remain on the island forever. Granted, his life back home was terribly sad and depressing (I mean, his dad tried to kill him, he was paralyzed, etc.), but couldn’t he just stay on the island and allow the others to be rescued?? Is it fair to make everyone stay there? I felt really sad for Locke during his flashbacks, but he’s making himself very unsympathetic on the island. Why can’t he just be truthful with everyone on the island, tell them about his crazy life? I’m sure they’d leave him there to live the rest of his life on the island. What’s the big deal?

Now to Ben: What is his deal? Locke is almost taunting Ben about his now being in a wheelchair. Ben was born on the island, he says, and Ben can’t seem to figure out how the island healed John but it’s not healing him. I’m not so sure I understand that either. Ben tries to bribe Locke not to destroy the submarine by telling him about this big box that can create anything he wants. What could this be?? Is it the machine that controls the whole island? Does it create the smoke monster? And can it actually bring people to the island?? How else could LOCKE’S FATHER have ended up on the island?? Seriously, the daddy issues on this show are unbelievable! Think about all the people who have had some sort of father problem on the show: Jack, Claire, Kate, Sun, Hurley, Alex, Walt & Michael. Are there more?

So, just a couple of theories/questions. I know it’s been mentioned before, but is the island a place where people must come to terms with the demons in their lives? Eko had to face Yemi, and then he was killed. It looks like Locke is about to have to face his father. You know that eventually Jack and Claire will figure out their connection and deal with that. Alex learned about her mother from Sayid tonight, so that will be an issue soon. (I loved Sayid for that, by the way.) Just a thought… any others? I’m usually not into trying to theorize about the entire show, but I just had to bring that up.

What did you think? Have any answers to my many, many questions? Let me know what you thought!

    I think I’m on to something…

Ok, we know that Sawyer isn’t Sawyer’s real name. His real name is James Ford. Now, if you remember back in season 1, when Hurley was going around with the flight manifest taking role, when he got to Sawyer, the name “Sawyer? was on the flight manifest. But he was deported officially by the Australian government, so the manifest would have used his real name, James Ford. We didn’t think anything of it.

Well, assume now that Locke’s dad was on the plane, and that Locke’s dad is the REAL Sawyer that conned the Young Sawyer’s parents and caused them to kill each other!!! THAT would explain why the name “Sawyer? was on the manifest!!! AND it would create some GREAT stuff later on in the season when he finds out that the guy responsible for his parents’ death is on the island.

With this whole “box? thing, where anything you truly want is in this “box?, Sawyer will get exactly what he wants more than anything! Revenge on the con man that destroyed his family.

    Wow JoshyC - great theory!

Holli - great recap. So do y’all think they used this box to conjure up Kate’s horse, Jack’s dad, Yemi, etc. All of those literally seemed to be on the island even though it would be impossible since Jack’s dad was dead and making the plane trip in a coffin and Yemi was dead.

And I agree - what’s with Locke. Maybe he wants everyone to stay on the island because he thinks if he can get everyone to “believe” then they will form some kind of utopia?

And one other thing - I don’t care if Jack did make a deal, why would he be laughing and playing football with the others? Would he just be the same old sulky Jack, waiting to leave the island?

And the preview for next week? What is up with Sun smacking Sawyer down? CAN’T WAIT!

  3. DaveP Says:

That’s a great theory Josh, it really does work, and if right, could be very explosive in later episodes, good catch.
I love that recap Holli and the theorising. I certainly think the father issue has some credence, there are too many of them with one for it not to be important. Locke is annoying me, he didn’t need to blow the sub up, he can refuse to be rescued if he wants, why force everyone else?
