Lost Season 4 Episode 2 Confirmed Dead

by

9.jpgAs much as I loved the episode tonight, I had to really check my watch for the time…did an hour of TV watching really just went by? I felt the episode owed me some more. I cannot wait for next week! I welcome the introduction of the four new characters. No one knows who they are yet; if they are with the good guys or with the bad guys. But I can tell you now — I love them all.

The episode opens with a news report. Oceanic 815 has been found in the bottom of the Sundra Trench, somewhere in Bali, with all the passengers confirmed dead.

NEW CHARACTERS FLASHBACK

Daniel Faraday is crying as he is watching the news on television. His companion asks what he’s crying for and Daniel replies that he has no idea.

Charlotte Lewis, an archaeologist, is in Tunisia, when she picks up a local newspaper detailing the story of Flight 815’s recovery. Her companion wonders why she is reading every single paper on it. At her digging site, she finds bones of polar bear…when Tunisia is a desert land. She also found a collar with the logo of Dharma Initiative.

Miles Straume appears to be a ghostbuster who has just listened to the news of the recovery before heading to his next house call — a grandmother who wants to find peace for her murdered grandchild. We see that Miles’ abilities are real, he can communicate with the dead.

Frank Lapidus is watching television, when he saw the clip of the ill-fated plane’s pilot, who was a colleague of his. He calls Oceanic hotline saying he’s got information. Frank believes that the dead body shown on TV was not his friend. And he was supposed to be the one flying that plane that day.

Naomi (from Season 3’s finale) and Matthew Abbadon (who appeared in last week’s episode) are the people responsible for pooling these four characters. Naomi doesn’t believe they have the proper training, as this is supposedly a dangerous mission, especially if there are survivors. But Abbadon tells her they are there for specific reasons and that he is certain no one survived from the crash.

They label Daniel a headcase, Frank a drunk, Miles a ghostbuster. They call Charlotte the anthropologist.

The episode opens with the four characters about to jump off the helicopter Frank was commanding, and they got separated as a result. Daniel is immediately found by Jack and Kate and then later, when Jack and Kate found the rest of his things and saw what was inside, he tells them that “rescuing” the group was not their primary reason.

Daniel had his transponder on and was quickly able to get to where Miles landed and they are reunited. Miles knew that Naomi’s death was not an accident, for Naomi spoke of a code when they last communicated with her. Jack and Kate brought the two of them to where Naomi’s body was. Miles performed some sort of ritual. Kate confessed to what has actually happened. Daniel and Miles were armed, so Jack asked if they could put it away. When Miles didn’t listen, Jack told him his people were on to him. Sayid and Juliet suddenly appear from behind the trees with guns pointed at Daniel and Miles.

On another part of the island, Locke and the rest of the group discovers Charlotte swimming in the river, her parachute hanging by a branch.

Here’s that scene once again:

Frank falls somewhere over the hills and has a broken leg. With his flare gun, he signals to where he is. Charlotte tells Team Locke that it was her team beckoning and that they should get to them. But Ben, who was eyeing the gun on Locke’s pants earlier, shot her twice. Luckily, she had a vest on and lived. Sawyer beats up Ben for doing what he did. And Locke wanted to shoot Ben, too.

2.jpgMeanwhile, Team Jack gets to Frank and helps him out. Frank shows them where he landed the helicopter. The look on their faces (Jack, Kate, Sayid, Juliet) upon seeing an actual helicopter was of pure happiness and relief.

While Sayid inspects the chopper, Juliet attends to Frank’s wounds. He asks for Juliet’s name. When she said who she was, Frank realizes she wasn’t a passenger of Oceanic 815 and was a local. When Miles heard this, he went ballistic and finally told everyone why they are here. He shows them a picture of Ben.

Back at Team Locke, Ben convinces Locke to keep him alive by surprising everyone that he knows those four people who have come to “rescue” Team Jack. He blurts out their names and backgrounds. He blurts out the fact that they are really after him and that he knows all of these because he a spy on their boat.

Thought bubbles…

  • I am really, really liking Daniel and Miles. They bring so much more color to the series now. I am intrigued by their background stories. I am intrigued by their demeanor?
  • I am also liking the way their introduction and flashbacks were told. Very tight and well written.
  • Why did Miles have a picture of Ben with him, when Ben was never out of the island (right?) ?
  • Why would they need a ghostbuster for this mission?
  • Hooray to Locke for asking what every Lost fan would like to — What’s that Black Smoke?
  • Oh yes, Hurley may have outed to Locke the fact that he knows of Jacob’s shack… that should be explored in succeeding episodes.
  • There was no Jin and Sun tonight. Nor Desmond.
  • They didn’t explain why Walt has changed appearance in merely 90+ days on the island, but Sawyer has come up with a nickname for it, when Locke told him he’s the reason why he knows no to trust the new people. Sawyer calls Walt — Taller Ghost Walt.
  • Who is Ben’s spy?
