Lost Season 4, So Far…A Recap

This Australian daily, The Age, has a very interesting article which provides a recap to where we are at with Season 4.
The big development of the current fourth season is the confirmation, revealed via flash forward at the end of season three after a gripping run home, that some of the survivors do get off the island. Indeed, the “Oceanic Six” — including erstwhile leader Jack (Matthew Fox) and the temperamental Kate (Evangeline Lilly) — are hugely famous, even though all their ranks are not yet accounted for and those that did make it are covering up what they know about their rescue. They’ve already claimed that nearly everyone died on impact, which makes you wonder how many of the survivors really will expire between now and the finale on a series that thankfully has never shied away from culling regulars.
The flash forwards, as opposed to the prior reliance on flashbacks, have upped the stakes on Lost. The flashbacks explained motivation and revealed character traits; the flash forwards suggest dire occurrences and terrible lapses in the coming episodes. In a recent episode Kate is revealed as the subsequent guardian of Aaron, the baby born on the island to young single mother Claire (Emilie de Ravin). Does this paint a target on her back? Jack’s pained refusal to see Aaron, his half-sister’s child (Days of our Lives alert!), suggests he may be culpable.
The flash forwards encourage speculation about where they fall in time. We’ve seen two versions of Jack off the island (suicidal and circumspect), suggesting that they’re spaced apart. I would make the call that flash forwards relate to the end of the 2009 season, and that the final batch in 2010 will go an unexpected step further — or, more likely, deeper. Not only will some survivors leave the island, they will go back.
This season is also notable for sprucing up some tiring storylines; the Jack, Kate and Sawyer (Josh Holloway) love triangle is now a square, with the arrival of defecting “Other” Juliet (Elizabeth Mitchell). The steadily growing crew of the ship that’s arrived offshore has brought ashore more fresh blood, including hot-tempered ghost whisperer Miles (Ken Leung) and physicist Daniel (the flaky Jeremy Davies).
