Lost: Why should they not trust the captain?
This was the note secretly given to Desmond and Sayid by someone in the boat:

So, why can’t they? What’s the captain hiding? Or is he in fact hiding something? Who is he?
His name is Captain Gault. We know from the most recent episodes, that the Captain is pretty straightforward but when crossed, he’s a difficult person to deal with. We know that he is strictly following orders from Charles Widmore, the man who has hired them to work on the freighter.
Captain Gault is actually a character from the book Captain Gault, Being the Exceedingly Private Log of a Sea-Captain, which was published in 1917. Lostpedia describes this character as “morally ambiguous and mysterious”. Suffice to say, when he is hired to do something, whatever that is and whether it’s for the good or bad, he does his purpose with precision and won’t have anything get in its way.
What’s your theory on the captain? Why can’t they trust someone as straightforward as him? Was he the one lying about the cover-up? Are we really convinced it is Widmore’s boat, as he says it is?
And did that note really come from Michael a.k.a Kevin Johnson?
