Nikki and Paulo - Gone Forever?
TV Guide gives a little insight into the episode that confused a lot of us:
While viewers have questioned whether the duo is actually done for, producers insist Nikki and Paolo won’t dig their way out of this one. In fact, Santoro is already busy with film commitments in his native Brazil, and Sanchez is shooting an ABC pilot, Football Wives, which is under consideration for the network’s fall schedule.
As for naysayers’ claim that the episode was “filler,” Cuse hints that Nikki and Paolo’s fates may be a sign of what’s to come: “In the progression that started with Eko’s death [earlier this season], there’s a sense that the island ultimately is collecting the souls of people who may not be redeemable.”
Are you listening, Others?
So, it sounds like they won’t be back. I’m actually surprised. I just knew that Nikki and Paulo had a bigger role to play later on in the show. I can’t believe the producers really had no better plan. What are you thoughts?

My thought is that the producers realised they’d made a mistake in bringing in new characters the way they did, shoehorning them in, much to the chagrin of us loyal viewers.
So they concoted a plot for an episode where not only did we get to see them come to a particularly gruesome and greedy end, we also got to laugh at the way they were left out of the original sequences. Oh and Sawyer’s constant asking of “Who are you?”. Brilliant episode.

I don’t really care if there was a plan or not, I’m just glad they’re gone. Nikki and Paulo were so annoyingly shoed in to scenes throughout the season, but at least they met an entertaining end. Back to our core group of castaways, please.

I agree with DaveP - I think this was a case of the producers listening to the fans irritation and correcting it.
But I do wonder, why did we all love Rose and Bernard and hate Nikki and Paulo so much? (Myself included)

I’m glad they’re gone, too. I just remember reading somewhere that the producers said they had big plans for Nikki and Paulo and that by the end of the season we would see them as pivotal characters to the mythology of Lost… So, I just assumed that they wouldn’t give up on their plan (if, in fact, they had one!) because of fans’ disapproval.
