What does it all mean??
That’s the question I seem to be asking myself more and more lately, and not just about this show. But I know all you really care about is the show, right? So, what is the purpose of the island? Why are the Others there? Why was the Dharma Initiative there? We know that there are tons of theories, so here are a couple more to fill this long hiatus time…
[Note: These comments were made after the “Cost of Living” episode where we lost Eko.]
“In the grand scheme of things, I think this show is about faith, redmeption and staying true to who you are and what you believe in (ie: not becoming “lost” in this current world of temptation that we live in). With Eko, he was originally a druglord/warlord and then became a “priest”. But when push came to shove, he reverted to form last night and refused to ask forgiveness for his sins, so the island killed him.”
“The island is about redemption, but in the end Eko was not the best example of that. He didn’t just refuse to confess but declared “I have not sinned!” That p—ed the island off! I was a little stunned myself when he said that. (I think it was a very important scene that belies the underlying theme of this show) The island demands redemption because redemption = better person = better civilization and the ensured continuation of humankind.”
I know I’ve said it before, but I really think this show does have an uplifting, human quality to it. Why else would we all be so concerned about these characters and about what it all means? We feel connected to their experiences because in a crazy way, we’re living parallel lives. Granted, we’re not on an island with polar bears, crazy smoky thing, and mysterious Others, but we are living in a world where things can be sometimes just as weird and unbelievable. That’s the beauty of any show–connecting with the audience. And Lost certainly has.
Lost, Mr. Eko, theories, redemption, faith
